100 die due to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu

Heavy rains have thrown life completely out of gear in many parts of coastal Tamil Nadu. The MET office has forecast very heavy rain over the next 24 hours.

Close to a hundred people have died over the last two weeks due to heavy rain across the state.
Schools and most of the colleges have been shut in nine districts including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Tiruvarur.
Farmers are a worried lot. In Tiruvarur alone 75 thousand acres of paddy cultivation has come under water and the submerged crop will be completely destroyed if there is no immediate respite from the rains.

HIV+ Couple to get married on World Aids Day

Humans are creatures driven by emotions and not logic. But it is necessary to add a bit of rationality in our approach to life. AIDS is a fatal disease that has gripped almost all the countries in the world. But its dire consequences stiffen with people acting irrationally and mistreating people inflicted with HIV. Mary Whitehouse said, "AIDS is a judgment we have brought upon ourselves". And it is we, the people of this world, who by joining hands and by emitting acts of humaneness can make this world a better place to live.

Setting up an example for rest of the world and putting their traumatic experiences behind, a HIV positive couple in Pune will tie the knot during the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1 and make a new beginning.

"I got married in the year 1998 and at that time I was living with my in-laws in Kolhapur. My husband fell seriously ill after three years of our marriage. He was shifted to Mumbai for treatment and it was found that he was suffering from AIDS," said Sunita Kumari. Sunita's husband breathed his last in the year 2002 after passing on the disease to her.

"We had a son in the year 2000. And I thank God for he tested negative. But after my husband passed away, I had to suffer a lot at my mother-in-law's hands. Finally, when things became intolerable, I decided to leave my in-law's place and shift to Pune with my son," recounts Sunita.

South star Suriya's next target: Bollywood

We don't know how he is down South but Suriya doesn't seem to have typical starry airs about himself.

"I am working on my (South Indian) accent. In my first film (he pronounces it as fillum like most South stars) my Tamil accent works because the character is like that. But I know that I have to work on my Hindi more if I want to do more movies here. It was a pleasure working in Mumbai, with people like Ram Gopal Verma and Vivek Oberoi," says Suriya of his last Hindi release, who is admittedly taking baby steps into Bollywood.
You can't help but marvel when he declares that he doesn't believe in a six-pack whereas it has become a must of sorts for all Bollywood films.

"I believe in fitness and I believe in showing off a fit body. But a six-pack has never been my thing. Also, I would never resort to taking steroids and pump up my body for a particular role," he says.

Suriya also reveals that he has made quite a few good friends in B-Town. "I have become friends with John (Abraham) and I quite admire his physique — he is fit and he is healthy at the same time. I must also say that I admire Salman Khan, Hrithik (Roshan) and Shah Rukh — they have really defined the look of a hero today," he says.

His base, says Suriya, will continue to be down South because that is where he has his primary audience. "My audience is there and I have established myself as an actor there. The South is a throbbing film industry where great films are made regularly and it's a powerhouse of talent there. I am quite happy in my space there [...]

World AIDS Day 2010 I Am

I feel cheated at this moment. I am expecting too much and I got disappointed. You should not trust a person easily.

Anyway, the World AIDS Day is yearly event. The World AIDS Day 2010 is on December 1, 2010. This is a way of convincing the government to resolve the issue on AIDS. It cannot be denied that there are already a number of persons suffering from this disease.

We should not continually let it happen. This day is not a reminder only to the government but to ourselves. It always should begin within us.

Sri Lanka's Education Minister says teachers cannot produce successful students by resorting to trade union action

Sri Lanka's Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena says that teachers resorting to trade union action to win demands will not help to produce successful students.

He also said that given the large population of female teachers in the county, each teacher has to be given maternity leave close to a year when they have children.

He explained that when a teacher has her first baby, she takes the maternity leave, half paid leave, and no pay leave that amounts to one year.

Addressing a function in Matara, Gunawardena noted that having to give female teachers one year leave for their first child birth was unfair to the students.

The minister also said that amidst all these issues, trying to resort to trade union action to win demands would not be fair on the part of the students.

Sri Lankan deputy minister and two others acquitted from misappropriation charges

A Sri Lankan court Monday released a deputy minister of the government and two other suspects from all charges over an alleged misappropriation of Samurdhi Funds.

Colombo High Court Judge Kumudini Wickremasinghe acquitted Deputy Environment Minister Abdul Cader and two others from charges of misappropriating Samurdhi Funds.

The state counsel had stated that it was difficult to continue with the case since the original documents regarding the case have been misplaced.

The state counsel had also said that the key witness in the case, former Samurdhi Commissioner General Dr. Kumari Navaratna, could not be summoned as she is overseas.

The state counsel had therefore requested court to dismiss the indictment charges.

Judge Wickramasinghe had then permitted the dismissal of the indictment charges and had ordered that the three suspects including Deputy Minister Abdul Cader be released.

Cader and two other suspects were charged of misappropriating 690 bags of rice belonging to the Samurdhi Social Development Trust Fund and making the government suffer losses amounting to millions of rupees.
