Sri Lanka President leaves for London

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has left for London Monday evening on a private visit.

President Rajapaksa had been invited by the Oxford Union and the Sri Lanka Society of Oxford University.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to address the Oxford Union on December 2nd, the Government Information Department said.

President Rajapaksa postponed his visit to London that was scheduled earlier this month due to the inauguration of his second term of office in on November 19.

Certain media reports said the President cancelled his trip to the UK fearing arrest under British law for alleged war crimes during Sri Lanka's war against Tamil Tiger rebels.

President Rajapaksa previously addressed the Oxford Union in 2008.
