India downplays WikiLeaks, defends ties with US

Downplaying the WikiLeaks issue, India on Tuesday said it has a multi-faceted and forward-looking strategic partnership with the US and there was a regular, open and candid dialogue between the two countries.

While reacting to release of diplomatic cables by whistleblower website WikiLeaks, ministry of external affairs said, "We would prefer not to comment on the issue of Wikileaks which purportedly are an account of privileged internal US government assessments and correspondence.

"We have a multi-faceted and forward-looking strategic partnership with the United States and there is a regular, open and candid dialogue between the two countries, on a number of matters of mutual interest," the official spokesman of the MEA said.

As part of its massive leak of a quarter million classified documents of the US government, the website released a "secret" cable issued by US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in which she has described India as a "self-appointed front-runner" for a permanent UNSC seat.

Clinton had also directed US envoys to seek minute details about Indian diplomats stationed at the United Nations headquarters, according to classified documents released by WikiLeaks.

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka condemns WikiLeaks disclosures

Strongly condemning the release of classified diplomatic communications by WikiLeaks, the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka said the U.S. has worked hard to assist the government and people of Sri Lanka to strengthen security, to further economic development, and to foster political reconciliation.


The U.S. Ambassador Patricia Butenis said her government is working hard to strengthen its existing partnerships and build new ones to meet shared challenges, from climate change to ending the threat of nuclear weapons to fighting disease and poverty and she is proud to be a part of that effort.

"As the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka, I'm proud to be part of this effort," she said.

Butenis recalling the assistance given by the U.S. to Sri Lanka for its development said the diplomatic mission recently collaborated with the government of Sri Lanka to bring a delegation of business leaders to increase trade between the two nations.

In addition the Ambassador pointed out that USAID, has partnered with local companies to train people in the former conflict zones in new skills to aid their livelihoods and the U.S. has just handed over the first installment of a $1.5 million donation to the Sri Lankan Army's Humanitarian Demining Unit.

Since 2009, the U.S. government has contributed approximately $180 million to help Sri Lanka, she said.

Sri Lankan court postpones IUSF Convener's bail application till next year

A Sri Lankan court has today postponed the bail application of student union leader Udul Premaratne.

The Colombo High Court s postponed the bail application of Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Convener, Udul Premaratne till January 24, next year.

Premaratne is in remand for allegedly damaging public property during a protest in October organized by the IUSF where students had forcibly entered the Higher Education Ministry premises.
